On Death and Dying - Elisabeth Kübler-Ross Of course, I decided to read this book because I was in the process of losing someone close to me. It's generally considered the starting point for any exploration of the psychology of dying, and it's where the five stages of grief concept originated. Strangely dated (it was written during the Vietnam war), the underlying ideas about how families, marriages and the genders work together is jarring and maybe not that helpful. However, one of the reasons this book is so dated is because of its success; the author helped found the hospice movement in America.
