I generally don't care for military sf, but this was very good. Completely see why it was nominated for a Nebula a few years ago. Set in a near-future America (and where the American military gets itself to), The Red follows a young lieutenant whose operational instincts verge on the preternatural. The near future is something of a shitshow, all of our police state bullshit made that much worse. And though it's oblique, the AI posited here is the most plausible one I've ever seen. Very good. Onto the next.
